We understand and respect the passion that drives the needs and concerns of owners who are buying and selling their businesses. Just as importantly, we understand and respect the value added by top advisors who partner with their clients to close complex, time-sensitive transactions.
Jim Johnston is a Managing Director at The Forbes M+A Group. Business transactions are in Jim’s genes. His mother, Peg Johnston, founded one of the first business brokerage firms in the Rocky Mountain West nearly 30 years ago, and over the last three decades Jim has developed relationships with most of the major intermediaries, corporate acquisition advisors, business brokers, and transition specialists throughout the region. As a transaction advisor, he has completed a breadth of deals in a variety of sectors, including business services, technology, construction and maintenance, real estate, manufacturing, consumer products, outdoor recreation, personal services, print and data management, IT managed services, fabricated metal products, food/beverage, and lawn and garden. These sectors span business-to-business, direct to consumer, distribution, manufacturing, retail, and wholesale channels.
Jim began his career in the 1990s as an educator and administrator, both domestically and abroad, upon which he built his highly consultative approach and distinctive ability to bridge gaps between diverse individuals in order to close even the most complex transactions.
In 2005, Jim became a Business Broker at Business Acquisitions, Ltd., a firm that serves business owners seeking to exit their businesses by representing them in the buyer marketplace from initial valuation through negotiations and closing. As the leading small business brokerage firm in the region, Business Acquisitions serves small business owners whose revenues range from $500,000 to $5 million.
In 2011, Jim joined The Forbes M+A Group as a Senior Advisor. The Forbes M+A Group is a leading transaction advisor to privately held companies in the lower-middle market. Jim represents and assists owners during the process of selling their businesses, merging, or partnering with other companies. The Forbes M+A Group also provides valuation and strategic planning services and facilitates the raising of debt or equity capital, specializing in delivering the sophistication of Wall Street-level investment banking services with the personal attention of a small firm.
Jim earned an Executive MBA from the University of Denver’s Daniels College of Business and a degree in English from Kenyon College. He is a Certified Business Intermediary (CBI), and he holds an Independent Broker license under the Colorado Real Estate Commission. He’s also a member of the Colorado Association of Business Intermediaries (CABI), International Business Brokers Association (IBBA), M&A Source, ACG – Denver, and Alliance of Mergers & Acquisitions Advisors.
For the Rotary Club of Denver, Jim has served as Chair of the Foundation Support Committee, raised funds for the eradication of polio through PolioPlus, and won the Club’s New Rotarian of the Year award in 2009. Since 2008 he has also served on the Board of Directors of The Gift of Giving, a 501(c)3 organization that acts as a conduit for charitable donations made as gifts.
When not working, Jim loves to hike, ski, play golf, and run marathons … just about anything athletic. He has spent extensive time traveling and living in many geographic areas including Eastern Europe and Central America. He also enjoys spending time with his wife, Pam, who runs a landscape design practice, and their three young kids.
